Shipbuilders can rise despite stronger won.
Korean shipbuilders should not be dismissed just because the won strengthens. In 2005-2007, USDKRW fell from around 2,000 to 900, yet Hyundai Heavy Industries rose 35x because structural growth dominated FX. When structural growth is intact, investors should not overreact to won strength.

Data center power engines create high-margin demand.
US data centers are facing grid interconnection delays, so developers need distributed power. Marine power generation engines are being repurposed as flexible power plants, and big tech customers are buying large capacity blocks of 600 MW to 1 GW at high prices. Because European specialist engine makers are already capacity-constrained, demand is coming to Korean shipbuilders, creating a new high-margin market beyond conventional shipbuilding.

Strong Won won't derail the shipbuilding supercycle.
Historical cycles show that Korean shipbuilders can still experience massive stock rallies even when the Won strengthens significantly, due to strong order backlogs. Investors should not overly fear the recent FX drop unless the rate falls below 1,250 won, as a stronger Won can also attract foreign buying.

US Navy outsourcing boosts Korean shipbuilders.
The US has allowed foreign construction of naval vessels, and the market is building expectations that Korean shipbuilders could win defense ship orders, driving Korean shipbuilding stocks higher.

US allows Korean yards build warships
Trump reportedly approved allowing Korean shipbuilders investing in US facilities to build up to two warships in Korea. Because US shipbuilding capacity is not yet ready, this gives Korean yards bridge work and about five years of time while US operations ramp up, which is viewed as clearly positive for Korean shipbuilders, especially Hanwha.

US LNG projects lift Korean suppliers.
Trump renewed mention of Alaska LNG and said Korean and Japanese funds could help finance it; Lee expects US-origin LNG projects, including Alaska LNG, to be active this year. This should support order expectations for Korean shipbuilders and has already driven sharp gains in Korean LNG-related steel pipe, gas pipe, and valve suppliers such as Daedong Steel, HiSteel, and Hwaseong Valve.

Korean shipbuilders win special-vessel demand.
Arctic routes and Golden Dome needs should lift icebreaker and special-vessel demand; Korean shipbuilders, especially HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and Samsung Heavy Industries, have high order outlooks as special and LNG vessels exceed half of 2026 orders.

Hold Korean shipbuilders through the year
Korean shipbuilders are a year-long holding. Earnings and orders should support the downside, while concrete US Navy project orders can drive a level-up. With China excluded from the US Navy market, Korea and Japan should share the opportunity; winning even about 50% would also open the MRO market, creating recurring revenue, a larger market, and more stability than the commercial-ship cycle. Margins on US Navy orders are attractive.

Weak won boosts export earnings.
A weak won hurts the economy but helps exporters; export companies such as Hyundai Motor, Hyundai Glovis, cosmetics, shipbuilders, and entertainment can see earnings revaluation in January and April reporting.

Weak won boosts Korean exporters.
The weak won is bad for the broad Korean economy but good for exporters because their dollar revenues translate into higher won earnings. Yoon says export-company earnings re-rating should become visible around January and April releases, naming autos, shipbuilders, cosmetics, ramen makers and entertainment as areas to watch. This is a broad complement to the semiconductor-led market.
